WR Sluggo from the I Form Wing set shows a five man route concept built around a double move on the outside. The X receiver runs a sluggo (slant and go) up the boundary as the primary vertical shot, while the Y receiver releases into a corner route to the opposite side for a secondary deep option. The HB releases out of the backfield on a wheel/curl-flat combo underneath, and the FB or TE runs a delayed drag across the middle to give a quick outlet against underneath zone drops. This is a man beater designed to stack a defender on the sluggo route and hit a big play down the field, with the drag and flat routes serving as checkdowns if the safety cheats over the top.
Defensive Reads
Watch the cornerback over the X receiver at the snap, if he jumps the initial slant break he is vulnerable to getting beat over the top on the go phase of the sluggo. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this coverage shell is the most exploitable because there is no second deep defender to help over the top. Key the play side linebacker depth, if he sits shallow to jump the drag or flat route it opens a bigger throwing window for the deep sluggo route. Against zone heavy defenses, look for the safety rotating down to double the sluggo, which should trigger a quick check down to the drag or flat route instead of forcing the deep ball. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the sluggo route takes time to develop, if the defense shows an overload blitz look pre-snap consider hot routing protection or checking to a quicker play in the set like Curls or X Slant.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in play action heavy game plans when you have already established the run game out of I Form Wing to hold the linebackers.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks or man coverage indicators like cornerbacks pressed on the X receiver, since the sluggo route thrives when the corner bites on the initial slant fake.
If you see two deep safeties or a clear zone shell, hot route the sluggo to a hitch or work the drag and flat combo underneath instead of forcing the deep shot.

Use manual motion or a quick pre-snap shift to identify if the defense follows the HB, which confirms man coverage and greenlights the sluggo as your first read.
