Mtn Power is a run play out of the I Form Wing set with 22 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift the formation before the snap. The blocking scheme pulls the fullback and offside guard around the point of attack to seal the edge, with the HB following the pulling linemen through the hole for a power run to the strong side. This is a downhill gap scheme run designed to overload one side of the box with double lead blockers, not a pass or play-action concept.
Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow near the line they are likely reading run and will fill the power hole fast. Identify whether the defense has a run blitz called by checking if a slot or overhang defender crashes down immediately at the snap. This play struggles against gap control fronts and defenses that key the fullback motion and adjust their front with a linebacker shift. Look for user controlled defenders flowing hard downhill, since a disciplined user linebacker can blow up the pulling guard and fullback combo. Against light boxes or two high safety shells with only six or seven in the box, this power scheme should have a clear numbers advantage at the point of attack.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down into the box, which tells you if they are keying run.
This play thrives on early downs in run heavy sequences, especially first and second down when defenses expect balance.
Pair Mtn Power with Mtn PA Power O or PA Mtn Power O later in the series so the defense has to respect both the run action and the play action off the same look.
If the defense stacks the box with an extra defender after the motion, consider checking to Mtn Zone or HB Sweep to attack the perimeter instead.
Trust your pulling linemen and stay patient behind the fullback lead block rather than trying to bounce it outside too early.
