Breakdown

PA Mtn Power O sells the Power O run action out of the I Form Wing set with a play-action fake, then attacks downfield off two vertical routes and an intermediate out. Both outside receivers push straight up the seam and break outward near the top of their stems for explosive shots, while the inside receiver runs a shallow out breaking toward the sideline as the underneath option. The blocking up front mimics the power run scheme to hold linebackers, so the primary read progression starts with the two vertical shots for a big play and comes down to the quick out route as the checkdown against zone drops or when the deep routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a two high or single high safety shell since this play is designed to exploit single high looks with vertical shots on both outside receivers. Watch linebacker depth and run fits, if they are stepping up hard to defend the power run action, the play-action window opens up for the seam routes behind them. Cover 3 and man coverage with aggressive linebackers biting on the run fake are the most vulnerable shells against this concept. Zone coverage with disciplined linebackers who sink into their drops and stay square can take away the underneath out route and force you into contested vertical throws. User-controlled defenders playing a lurk technique in the shallow zone can jump the out route, so track that defender post-snap before committing to the checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run-heavy personnel situations where the defense is keying on Power O or HB Power O from the same set to sell the fake. Check the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety cheating toward the boundary the backside vertical route is likely to win one on one. Hot route the underneath out into a quick hitch or drag if you are facing a hard blitz look and need a faster release. Pair this call with HB Power O and Mtn Power in your play-calling sequence so the defense respects the run fake and starts sliding down, then hit them with this shot play once they bite. Best used on second and short or first and ten to keep defenses honest and prevent linebackers from selling out on the run.
