HB Counter Wk is a power run play out of the I Form Wing set that pulls blockers from the weak side to lead the HB through a designed misdirection scheme. The offensive line and FB block down to sell flow one direction while the counter action develops opposite, creating a natural cutback lane once the pulling guard and lead blocker clear the hole. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team at the point of attack, then flows to the pulling blockers for the kickout and lead, with the HB reading the block on the edge before deciding to bounce outside or cut back inside the traps.
Watch the linebacker depth and flow at the snap, since aggressive downhill linebackers who bite on the initial blocking flow open up the cutback lane for the HB. Key on the play side defensive end and edge defender to see if they get reached or kicked out, because a defender who holds his gap disciplined can blow up the pulling lead blocker. Check for stacked fronts or run blitzes on the weak side pre-snap, since sending extra defenders into the pulling lane can beat the counter before it develops. Identify user controlled defenders spying the backfield, as a user linebacker who reads counter action instead of flowing with the fake can jump the pulling guards and force a negative play. This concept struggles against disciplined gap control defenses that stay home on their assignments rather than flowing hard to the initial action.
Run this play when the defense shows a fast flow or over-aggressive linebackers who bite on the initial down blocks, since the misdirection is designed to exploit downhill pursuit. Use pre-snap motion checks to confirm the defense is not stacking the weak side, since a heavy weak side front can clog the pulling lanes before the guards get to the hole. This play pairs well with HB Lead and HB Zone Toss in the same set since all three sell similar backfield action but hit different gaps, keeping linebackers guessing on flow. Save HB Counter Wk for early down situations like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more likely to play base run fits instead of loading the box. If the defense keys the counter action after repeated snaps, mix in FB Fake HB Toss or PA Boot Flow from the same formation to punish over pursuit with a fake handoff.
