Breakdown

HB Power G is a gap-scheme run play out of the I Form Wing formation with 22 personnel, showing a fullback and split TE/wing look to the play side. The diagram shows a pulling guard leading through the play side gap with down blocks from the line, the fullback kicking out or leading up through the hole, and the HB taking the handoff to follow the pulling lineman downhill. This is a pure power run design, not a play-action or RPO, built to create a numbers advantage at the point of attack with double teams up front and a puller securing the edge. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the play side A or B gap, read the puller's block on the force defender, then cut off the fullback's lead block into the alley.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the Mike linebacker's depth and alignment since he is the primary run fit defender the pulling guard needs to seal. Check safety rotation: a single high safety shell or Cover 3 often leaves light boxes that this power scheme can exploit, while two deep safeties rotating down into the box can outnumber the blockers. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they scrape hard and squeeze the puller's lane the ball carrier needs to bounce it outside off the fullback's block. Watch for user-controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately at the snap, since a good user will try to shoot the play side gap before the guard can get around and seal him. This play struggles against heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge or overload the play side A gap before the pull can develop, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz personnel or bear fronts.

Usage Tips

Run this out of run-heavy personnel packages on early downs, ideally 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep defenses honest against your I Form Wing play action shots. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box you have a numbers advantage for the pulling guard and fullback lead. Pair HB Power G with HB Counter Wk and Mtn Power Weak in the same drive so linebackers cannot sit on the play side A gap read every snap. Use motion sparingly here since the wing alignment already gives you a lead blocker, but if you want extra misdirection call Motion Power Weak instead to hold the backside pursuit. Sequence this play with PA Power O and Mtn PA Power O later in the game once the defense starts crashing hard on the pulling guard, since the play fake off the same look will freeze linebackers and open up the flat or post routes.
