Strong Stretch out of the I Form Wing set is an outside zone run play that sends the entire offensive line flowing laterally toward the strong side to establish a wall for the HB to press the edge. The diagram shows the fullback and HB aligned in the backfield with the HB taking a wide track toward the sideline off the zone flow, reading blocks from the playside tackle out to the wing before deciding to bounce, bend, or press downhill through a cutback lane. This is a zone run play designed to beat aggressive downhill defenses by stretching them horizontally, with the primary read progression starting on the edge defender and working inside through the double team and combo blocks up front.
Watch the playside defensive end and outside linebacker first. If they crash inside hard, the HB should bounce this outside immediately for a big gain. Key the strong safety alignment before the snap. If he is stacked in the box or showing run blitz, expect a fast flow to the edge that can be user beaten with a lurking linebacker. Post-snap, identify whether the linebackers are flowing with the zone stretch or staying home. Disciplined linebackers who stay square in their gaps will limit this to a short gain or force a tight cutback. This run struggles against defenses that stay in their gaps with contain from the edge defenders. Scrape exchange linebackers and disciplined 4-3 fronts that do not overpursue are the best counters. User the playside linebacker as a defender to squeeze the stretch lane, forcing the HB into a slower decision that lets the pursuit catch up from the backside.
Run this from under center in the I Form Wing set to keep both the FB and Wing available as extra blockers on the edge, which is critical against odd fronts and 4-3 Under looks.
Check the strong safety and outside linebacker depth before the snap. If they are crashing hard downhill or showing blitz, this play punishes them because the zone flow pulls them out of the box.
Use the HB Lead, HB Inside Zone, and Mtn Power plays in the same set to keep the defense honest. Mixing in Strong Stretch after establishing inside zone runs makes linebackers hesitate on their fits, opening bigger cutback lanes.
Best called on early downs (first and second) or short yardage third downs when you want to stay balanced and set up play-action shots like PA Boot Flow or PA U Slide later in the drive.
If the defense shows a hard shade to the strong side pre-snap, motion the fullback or use a pre-snap shift to check into a weakside run like Zone Wk instead of forcing the stretch into a stacked box.
