Breakdown

PA Waggle out of the I Form Wing set sells the run fake to the backfield before the QB rolls out with the boot action toward the play side. Off the play fake, the deep red route breaks vertically upfield from the middle of the formation as the primary vertical shot, while the blue route runs a flat route in the same direction as the roll for an easy checkdown, and the yellow route works a shallow crosser from the backside that gives a late-developing option away from the roll. This is a play-action man and zone beater that stresses the flat defender and the deep third or deep half player at the same time, with the QB progression reading the flat route first on the run then climbing to the vertical route if the defense collapses down on the boot.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers cheating up into the box pre-snap, since that hard run fit is exactly what PA Waggle is designed to exploit with the roll. Key the flat defender at the snap, if he sits at home instead of widening with play action, the throwing window to the blue flat route shrinks fast. Identify single high safety shells before the snap, since a lone deep defender will struggle to help over the top on the vertical red route once the QB rolls to that side. Look for user defenders spying the boot lane or shadowing the QB, a disciplined edge contain defender can blow this play up before the fake even sells. Against zone coverage, watch the underneath defender responsible for the flat to short middle area, if he sinks late the crossing yellow route can be undercut for a turnover.

Usage Tips

Use this out of I Form personnel on early downs after establishing HB Lead or HB Power O so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties.

Check for single high safety looks or aggressive run fits pre-snap since the boot action punishes linebackers who crash hard on the run fake.

On the move, read the flat defender first, if he widens with the blue flat route, come off it late to the vertical red route splitting the seam.

Against man coverage, the crossing yellow route on the backside is a good answer if the initial defender covering the flat and the vertical route are locked in tight, since it clears away from the roll.

Mix this with straight run plays like HB Power O and Mtn Power to keep defenders honest before dialing up PA Waggle to hit the boot action when the defense starts flowing hard to stop the run.
