HB Stretch out of I Form Wing is an outside zone run play with the full offensive line flowing laterally to the play side while the HB takes a wide aiming point behind the FB lead blocker, reading the edge for a cutback or bounce. The Wing tight end and FB seal the play side edge, giving the runner a horizontal stretch read across the entire defensive front before he plants downhill. This is a run play designed to test lateral pursuit discipline, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is bounce outside first, then cut to the natural running lane if the edge defender squeezes hard.
Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker first, since fast flow defenders who crash the mesh point open a cutback lane behind them. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the FB lead blocker, as a good user player will abandon zone assignment to blow up the stretch at the mesh point. Identify run blitzes from the edge pre-snap, since a contain blitzer off the corner can string this play out and force a loss if the RB does not cut back quickly. Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep, as light boxes with only five or six defenders in the front make this stretch run explosive. Heavy fronts like 46 Bear or Goal Line with extra defensive linemen stacked inside shut this down fast, since the lack of natural cutback space forces the RB into traffic.
Run this out of standard downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short so linebackers cannot sit on the run and jump the stretch lane.
Check the defensive front pre-snap for 4-3 Over or Under fronts with light boxes, since HB Stretch punishes defenses that stack the interior and leave the edge thin.
Use manual motion or the FB to identify the strong side linebacker flow before the snap, then commit to bouncing outside if he flows hard inside.
Pair this play with HB Inside Zone and HB Power O from the same set to keep linebackers honest, since all three plays start with similar mesh points but attack different gaps.
Sequence HB Stretch early in a game plan to set up PA Boot Flow or PA U Slide later, since those play-action rollouts sell off the same outside zone footwork.
