Mtn Power Weak is a gap scheme run play out of the I Form Wing set with 22 personnel, featuring pre-snap motion to shift the formation strength and disguise the run direction. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard (and often the fullback) to the weak side to create a lead blocker for the HB, kicking out the edge defender while the play-side line seals down inside. This is a power gap run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the pulling guard: press the inside crease off the fullback's kick block first, then bounce outside if the alley is clogged by flowed linebackers.
Watch for the weak side linebacker crashing downhill immediately after the motion, this signals the defense is reading run flow and will blow up the pulling guard's angle. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the play side box means the defense expects the run and will fill the alley fast. Identify if the defense runs a scrape exchange with the defensive end and linebacker, this counters the kick out block and forces the HB to cut back inside. Look for edge defenders squeezing down at the snap, if they crash inside before the pull develops the play gets strung out wide with no lead blocker in front. Man coverage shells with press corners tend to leave extra bodies in the box, so if you see man alignment pre-snap expect a loaded front and consider bouncing to a cutback lane.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the weak side, this tells you if they are keying run direction.
Run this out of base personnel on early downs (1st and 2nd, 2 to 6 yards to go) when you want to establish downhill physicality and set up play-action later.
Pair this with Mtn PA Power O or PA Mtn Power O later in a series once the defense starts crashing hard on the weak side flow, the run action sells the fake and opens up the boot or leak routes.
Manually control the fullback or pulling guard with the right stick lead block to smash the first defender in the alley, this gives your HB a cleaner track through the crease.
Avoid calling this into stacked run fronts with 8 in the box unless you have a numbers advantage, use HB Lead or FB Dive to change the launch point if the weak side gets loaded.
