PA Scissors out of the I Form Wing set shows a play-action fake to the HB with two receivers running a crossing scissors concept on the right side: the outside WR breaks in on a deep dig-like path toward the opposite sideline while the inside slot receiver crosses underneath him toward the opposite flat, creating a natural rub against man coverage. Defensive Reads
Read the mesh point of the scissors routes first: if the underneath defender chases the crosser man to man, look for the natural rub to spring your receiver open against trail coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since a linebacker sitting too shallow in a zone drop will get picked off by the two crossing routes and leave a throwing lane underneath. Key the play side safety on the fake: if he steps up hard on the HB action, the backside corner-post will be wide open behind him. This play struggles against a hard zone blitz or a nano blitz that gets immediate pressure before the play-action fake can develop, since the deep routes take time to break. Cover 3 with a robber sitting in the middle of the field can undercut the crossing routes, so if you see a single high safety with a linebacker spying the middle, look to attack the flat quickly instead of forcing the scissors read.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake by holding the snap button briefly so the HB fake actually influences linebackers and safeties before you throw.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are sitting shallow at 8-10 yards, expect Cover 2 and prioritize the scissors crossers underneath since the corners will have deep help.
If you see two deep safeties split wide with corners playing off, that is Cover 4, so hit the crosser breaking away from the flat defender before the underneath zone can widen.
Use hot routes to convert the backside corner-post into a fade if you see a cornerback playing aggressive man technique with no safety help over the top.
Pair this with HB Lead or HB Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play-action fake carries more weight against linebackers who are keying run fits.
Best called on second and short or first and ten when defenses are more willing to sell out on run support, since the fake needs early down credibility to freeze the second level.
