TE Post out of the I Form Wing set sends the tight end from the line on a deep post that cuts across the middle of the field, giving you a vertical shot at the seam and post window. The two receivers to the boundary side run a shallow crosser and a deep out breaking toward the sideline, while the backside X runs an outside release to clear space for the post. This is a play-action-free dropback pass built as a man beater, since the post attacks any single-high defender who has to run with the TE across the field, and your primary read progression starts with the TE post, works down to the shallow drag underneath, and finishes with the deep out as a check down against soft zone drops.
Identify the free safety alignment pre-snap, a single deep safety signals man coverage underneath and tells you the post has a clean lane if your linebacker cannot carry the TE vertically. Watch the linebacker assigned to the TE at the snap, if he sinks into a zone drop instead of matching stride for stride the post throw window opens immediately. Key on user-controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field, since a smart user linebacker can undercut the post route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Two deep safeties with underneath zone coverage will clog the post read, so check the crosser and deep out as safety valves when you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells post-snap. Disguised blitzes off the edge can rush the throw before the post develops, so account for pressure and be ready to climb the pocket or get the ball out early on the shallow crosser.
Look for single-high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since the TE post is designed to split the safety and exploit a linebacker who cannot keep pace over the middle.
Use motion or a hard count to see if the defense shifts into man coverage, then trust the post route against any linebacker or safety matched up on the TE.
If you see two-high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route the TE post to a shorter option or check it down to the crosser since the post window shrinks against split safeties.
Pair this play with Curls or PA Spot from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shots down the field, then dial up TE Post once you have drawn linebackers into shallow zone drops.
Run this on second and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, since the deep out and crosser give you answers if the post is capped.
