HB Lead out of the I Form Wing set is a straightforward power run play built around a fullback iso block leading through the hole for the HB. The diagram shows the FB attacking downhill first to seal the point of attack while the HB follows behind him, taking the handoff and reading the FB's block to decide whether to hit the hole inside or bounce it outside. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is simple: watch the FB's iso block, then pick the crease it creates or bounce outside if the linebacker fills too fast.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the box count and safety depth: a light box with a single high safety is a green light to run this play, while two safeties creeping down signals a run blitz or extra defender at the point of attack. Post-snap, key the strong side linebacker's first step; if he shoots the gap immediately he is reading the FB's block and you should be ready to bounce the HB outside for a cutback. Watch for a user-controlled defender flying downhill from a linebacker spot, since this often signals a spy or gap-shoot blitz designed to blow up the iso block before it develops. This play struggles against heavy run blitzes and 46 style fronts that overload the box, so avoid calling it into stacked fronts with extra defenders crashing the line of scrimmage. It performs well against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts with normal linebacker depth, since the FB's iso block can consistently win a one-on-one matchup against a single second level defender.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at linebacker depth to confirm the defense is in a base run front before snapping it, since light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders are ideal for this play.
Manually control the FB after the snap in short yardage or goal line spots to pick your iso block target and steer him directly into the biggest threat, usually the strong side linebacker.
If you see the defense stacked with an extra safety or linebacker in the box, hot route the HB to bounce outside immediately rather than forcing it up the middle into a losing numbers battle.
Pair HB Lead with HB Counter Wk and HB Zone Toss in the same personnel package to keep defenders guessing on run direction and force overaggressive linebacker flow that opens up cutback lanes.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains, and mix in PA Boot Flow or PA Power O from the same formation afterward to punish linebackers who bite on the run action.
