HB Lead Dive out of the I Form Wing set is a straight downhill run play that sends the fullback through the hole first to lead block for the halfback, who takes the handoff and hits the gap between the tackles. The diagram shows the offensive line holding their gaps with the fullback climbing to the second level to seal off the first linebacker that shows in the crease, giving the halfback a clean north-south crease. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overpursuing linebackers, with the primary read being the fullback's block: follow him through the initial hole, but be ready to bounce outside if the middle linebacker fills fast.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box: if the defense has seven or more defenders inside the tackles, this play loses its blocking math and should be checked out of. Watch the middle linebacker's depth and shade, since he is the key second-level defender the fullback lead block is designed to remove from the play. Look for safeties creeping down into the box pre-snap, which signals run blitz or a Cover 0 look that overloads the interior and beats this concept outright. Zone defenses with linebackers reading gap responsibility tend to fill quickly, so if the mike linebacker is triggering downhill fast off the snap, this run gets contained; conversely, aggressive man coverage on the perimeter that pulls linebackers into pass drops opens up the interior crease for a big gain. If the defense shows a stacked 4-3 under front with the strong safety in the box, expect the fullback to get engaged immediately, so be ready for the halfback to have to make his own yards rather than ride the initial hole.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts where the box count is six or fewer defenders, since the lead blocker needs room to work. Check the pre-snap alignment of the middle linebacker: if he is stacked directly over the center at normal depth, expect him to be the primary conflict defender the fullback has to seal. Motion into this formation from HB Lead or Close HB Lead first so the defense has to diagnose the same backfield picture snap after snap, then hit them with HB Lead Dive when they start cheating linebackers toward outside runs like HB Sweep or HB Zone Toss. Pair this play in a sequence with PA Boot Flow or PA Power O out of the same Wing I Form look to keep safeties honest, since both plays sell the same downhill run action before breaking off it. Avoid calling this on third and long or against heavy blitz packages that stack extra defenders into the box, since there is no cutback design to counter numbers advantage.
