Breakdown

Mtn PA Power O is a play-action shot play off the Power O run fake out of the I Form Wing set with 22 personnel. The diagram shows two vertical routes stemming from the outside receivers straight up the field, while the fullback or H-back releases into the flat on a shallow crossing route underneath. This is a man beater designed to attack single high and cover 1 or cover 3 shells, with the primary read progressing from the flat route first to hold linebackers and safeties, then working to either vertical seam or sideline route depending on the deep safety's rotation.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high safety, since this play is built to exploit cover 1 and cover 3 with its two vertical routes stretching the deep field. Watch linebacker depth and run fits at the snap, if they bite hard on the Power O action, the vertical seams and flat route will have easy throwing lanes. Key the flat defender or curl-to-flat zone defender, if he sits on the flat route the quarterback should climb the progression to the verticals. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the fullback release into the flat, this is the first area competitive players will jump to shut down the checkdown. This play struggles against two deep safety shells like cover 2 or cover 4, since the verticals run into help over the top and can be squeezed by sideline corners playing outside leverage.

Usage Tips

Run this from run-heavy personnel and down and distance like second and short or first and ten to sell the Power O fake and freeze linebackers.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense is stacked to defend HB Power O this play punishes overaggressive run fits with two verticals behind them.

Use the flat route as a check down against pressure or if both safeties stay deep, but look to the vertical routes if you see man coverage or a single high safety cheat toward the strength.

Pair this play in sequence with Mtn Power O, HB Power O, and Mtn Power to establish the run fake, then call Mtn PA Power O once the defense starts crashing downhill on run tendencies.

Avoid calling this against heavy zone shells with two deep safeties unless you plan to dump it off quickly, since both verticals can be capped.
