Breakdown

HB Slam is a downhill inside run out of the Pistol Spread 10 personnel look, designed as a quick-hitting dive between the guards. The diagram shows the offensive line uncovered with no combo blocks or pulling linemen drawn, indicating straight double team and man protection at the point of attack with the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the A or B gap immediately. There is no route concept shown since this is a designated dive, so it is purely a run play meant to attack light boxes rather than a play-action or RPO look. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the initial gap and react to the first threat, cutting off the double teams inside if the defense flows hard laterally.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap: if they are sitting at five yards or deeper, the interior gaps are naturally softer for this dive. Key the defensive tackles alignment: a 3-technique or shaded nose can clog the exact gap this play attacks, so switch to an outside run if you see that shade. Post-snap, track whether inside linebackers flow hard to the play side; disciplined backers who stay home in the A and B gaps kill this run before it develops. User-controlled defenders spying the middle or lurking in the box will jump this play immediately, so avoid calling it into a stacked run front. This play struggles against odd-front blitz packages with extra defenders crashing downhill, but it is effective against nickel and dime sub packages that lack size inside.

Usage Tips

Use HB Slam on early downs when the defense shows a light box with only six or seven defenders near the line of scrimmage.

Check safety depth pre-snap: if both safeties are deep and linebackers are stacked wide for pass coverage, this play has a clean lane up the middle.

Pair this with Read Option or HB Draw from the same personnel to keep defenders guessing on run fits without changing your formation tendencies.

Avoid calling this against heavy stacked fronts or when the defense shows an obvious run blitz with linebackers crashing downhill pre-snap.

Mix in Zone Fake Jet or PA Boot afterward to punish linebackers who start keying run flow and abandon their pass responsibilities.
