Y Cross out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel shows a five man route concept built around a deep crossing route from the Y that travels from the right side all the way across the field. The X runs a deep vertical to clear the top of the coverage while the slot receiver on that side runs an out to the sideline, creating a natural high low read against zone defenders sitting underneath. On the backside, the outside receiver runs a corner route and the back releases into a flat route from the backfield, giving the quarterback a check down and a shorter option if the cross gets picked up. This is a classic man beater and zone beater that stresses linebackers and safeties horizontally, with the primary read starting on the Y crosser and working to the corner route and flat as the play develops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth. Two high safeties with even spacing often means zone drops that will clog the crosser's lane late in its route. Watch cornerback alignment on the X receiver's side. Press man on that corner signals man coverage across the board, which favors the Y crosser winning off the rub. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker. If he sits and reads the crosser instead of dropping to a zone, that is a man look and the crosser should be your first target. Look for user controlled defenders lurking in the middle of the field. A rover or spy sitting in the crosser's lane is the biggest threat to this concept and should push you to the corner route or flat quickly. Cover 3 with a hard flat drop from the corner can take away the flat route, so be ready to climb the progression back to the crossing route if that happens.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and medium when you have time to let the Y crosser develop across the field.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man or zone. Against man coverage the crosser will create natural separation working across traffic, so trust the rub.
Against zone shells, read the linebacker flow. If linebackers sink hard on the crosser, hit the corner route or flat route on the backside for an easier completion.
Hot route the flat route into a check release if you are seeing a lot of pressure looks so you have an extra blocker and a quick outlet.
Pair this with Y Shallow Cross and Slot Outside in the same set to keep the defense guessing between deep crossers and quick underneath throws, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits and coverage drops.
