Slant Bubble is a quick-game concept out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that pairs mirrored slant and bubble screen combos to both sides of the formation. Both outside receivers run slants toward the middle of the field while the slot receivers on each side bubble out to the flat, giving the quarterback a two-way go based on which side the defense leaves softer. This is a man and zone beater built for a fast pre-snap decision, with the primary read progression starting on the side with the more favorable leverage or numbers advantage, working slant first and bubble as the checkdown or immediate hot route target against blitz looks.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on both sides to determine which slant or bubble has the better matchup before the snap even happens. Post-snap, user the flat defender or slot corner to jump the bubble route since it is the first quick answer against pressure. Watch for Cover 2 or Cover 4 zone drops from the linebackers, as a fast-flowing curl-flat defender can undercut the slant route on either side. Man coverage with inside leverage corners struggles against the slant, so if you see man alignment pre-snap expect the quarterback to attack that slant window immediately. Disguised blitzes get exposed by the bubble screen, so spy the slot defenders and rotate a linebacker underneath to cut off the bubble as the blitz answer.
Usage Tips
Pick a side pre-snap based on cornerback alignment, favoring the slant against inside leverage corners and the bubble against outside leverage or soft press corners.
If the defense shows blitz or a nano blitz look, immediately work the bubble screen as your answer since it gets the ball out before pressure arrives.
Use this play on first and second down in rhythm passing situations to keep the offense on schedule and set up shot plays like Four Verticals or PA Deep In later in the drive.
Pair Slant Bubble with Quick Slants or Speed Out from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between full-field slant combos and this mirrored slant bubble look.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, target the bubble in the flat since the slant will run into a hard flat defender or curl-flat zone drop.
