The diagram shows four receivers split wide with no true routes run, they are locked as run blockers or decoys to stretch the defense horizontally, while the offensive line executes down blocks with the backside guard and tackle pulling to lead the HB through the counter gap. The primary read is the play side double team and the pulling lead blocker, with the HB pressing the hole before reading the linebacker fill to decide between the designed gap and a potential bounce outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth before the snap, stacked linebackers who are square to the line can fill the counter gap fast and blow it up before the pulling blocker arrives. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down inside on the down block flow the HB should bounce this outside for a bigger gain. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers means those defenders are locked away from the box, which favors the counter numbers advantage up front. Look for a hard edge blitz or nano blitz off the backside, since the counter action takes extra time to develop this is one of the few weaknesses this play struggles against. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an extra hat in the box and a spy linebacker reading backfield flow is the toughest matchup for this concept since it erases the pulling lead blocker's angle.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when you want to stay balanced out of a spread shotgun set without tipping pass. Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has fewer than six defenders in the box this is an easy green light against base fronts. Use the HB Slam or HB Dive from this same set as a quick hitting complement so defenders start cheating up, then hit them with the slower developing counter action for a bigger explosive gain. Motion is not built in here so rely on formation recognition, if you see two high safeties held deep the counter has room to work against light boxes. Pair this with Read Option or HB Draw in your play calling sequence so defenders cannot sit on the counter timing and start guessing run direction every snap.
