Breakdown

HB Dive out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel is a straight downhill run play with four receivers spread wide to pull defenders out of the box, leaving the HB one on one with the interior defensive front. The offensive line blocks straight ahead with double team potential on the nose or defensive tackle, and the HB takes the handoff and reads the initial hole between the guards before pressing upfield. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overpursuing linebackers rather than a man or zone beater through the air, and the primary read progression is simply hole to hole: press the A gap first, then bounce to either B gap based on the first key defender's flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check safety depth since a single high safety with only six in the box is the ideal trigger for this play to hit big. Watch the middle linebacker's alignment and first step, if he crashes downhill immediately he is reading run correctly and will clog the dive lane. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles for penetration since a good interior push from a three technique or nose can blow this play up before the HB reaches the line. User controlled defenders sitting in the A gap or spying the mesh point are the biggest threat, if the user jumps the dive immediately you should bounce this out of your play calling rotation for a few series. Against nano blitz packages or heavy interior pressure looks, this play gets stuffed for a loss, so switch to HB Draw or Read Option to slow down that aggression.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and only call this against six man boxes or lighter since the four wide receivers are not real threats to hold extra defenders out of the run fit.

Use the right stick to manually press the HB into the A gap and pause before committing so linebackers flow past before you plant and cut.

Pair this with RPO Alert Dive Out or RPO Alert Dive Hitches from this set so the defense has to respect the dive look off the same mesh point action, forcing linebackers to freeze on run fits.

Best called on first and ten or second and short when you want positive yardage without exposing your QB, and mix it with HB Slam and HB Slip Screen to keep run fits guessing.

Avoid calling this into stacked eight man boxes or against defenses showing heavy inside blitz pre-snap since there is no lead blocker to clean up extra rushers.
