HB Stretch out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel is an outside zone run play that has the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side while the HB takes a lateral path from the pistol alignment before pressing the edge and reading blocks. This is a pure zone run play, not a play-action or RPO, designed to get the defense flowing horizontally and create a cutback lane once flow overcommits. The primary read progression is backside to frontside: the HB presses the stretch call, reads the edge defender first, then works inside to the first available crease if the play side gets sealed.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a run heavy front with linebackers stacked tight to the box, since that alignment can clog the stretch lane before the zone fully develops. Watch safety depth before the snap, a safety sitting at eight yards or closer signals run support that can arrive quickly to the edge and force an early cutback read. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens for a big gain. This play struggles against gap exchange fronts and disciplined edge defenders who stay home instead of flowing hard, since that eliminates the natural cutback window. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the alley or lurking behind the line, a smart user defender can jump the cutback lane and blow up the play if the HB commits too early.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.
Look for linebackers cheating outside the tackles pre-snap, since aggressive flow to the edge sets up a natural cutback lane once the zone stretches them out.
Use the right stick to manually guide the HB if you see a linebacker flowing too fast, pressing the crease late can freeze overpursuit and open a home run cutback lane.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Dive or Read Option from this same set so the defense has to respect an inside track before you hit them with the outside zone stretch.
Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to stay on schedule and set up misdirection concepts like HB Counter later in the drive.
