Wide Zone is an outside zone run play out of 10 personnel Pistol Spread, giving the offensive line a full zone blocking track that flows laterally toward the play side before the backs decide where to cut. The HB takes a lateral zone path with the pistol alignment giving him extra vision on his landmark, aiming to press the edge and read blocks from the play side tackle out. This is a run play designed to attack zone run fits by stretching the defensive front horizontally, with the primary read progression being the play side track: bounce outside if the edge is sealed, bend it back to the cutback lane if the backside defenders overpursue, or stick it up through the natural crease if the defense flows too hard laterally.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting back in read and react mode they can fill cutback lanes fast so bounce it outside instead. Key the play side defensive end and edge defender, if he crashes hard down the line the HB should press wider to the alley. Look for user controlled defenders spying the mesh point, since a smart user can jump the cutback lane and blow up the zone track. This play struggles against aggressive gap exchange fronts and stacked box looks with eight in the box, so check to a pass if the defense shows heavy run commitment pre-snap. It beats defenses running base zone coverage shells with light boxes, especially if safeties are rotated deep and linebackers are flowing slow to the play side.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion checks to see if defenders shift with the flow, since Wide Zone punishes defenses that overcommit to lateral pursuit.

Identify light boxes before the snap, six or fewer defenders in the box is the green light to run this instead of checking to a pass.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick screen or bubble look if your scheme allows it, giving you an RPO style bailout against overloaded fronts.

Pair this play with HB Dive and HB Counter in the same personnel to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction while using identical formation tells.

Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks, and mix in Read Option or Speed Option afterward since they share the same zone blocking picture and hard read for the defense.
