Wide Zone Wk is an outside zone run out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel, showing four wide receivers split two by two with no tight end on the field. The offensive line flows laterally to the play side with the fullback or lead blocker mesh point and the halfback taking a weak side track, aiming to stretch the defense horizontally before finding a crease. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read progression for the running back is playside cutback lane first, then bend it backside if the edge defender or linebacker flows too hard playside.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, this signals a run blitz designed to beat outside zone at the mesh point. Identify if the defensive end is staying home or crashing down the line, a disciplined end who holds the edge is the biggest threat to this weak side zone run. Key on the play side outside linebacker's depth and leverage, if he is squeezed tight to the line he can blow up the stretch before it develops. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a safety or linebacker spot are the main lurk threat, spy their movement post-snap to see if they are jumping the zone track. This run struggles against gap-sound run fits with a heavy front, but it exploits defenses that overpursue with fast flow linebackers or leave the backside weak side unaccounted for.
Usage Tips
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the spread formation removes extra blockers.
Look at defensive end and outside linebacker alignment before the snap, if they are crashing hard inside you want to bounce this outside immediately off the snap.
Use this weak side variant to counter defenses that key on your strong side zone tendencies, it keeps linebackers honest and slows down their flow.
Pair this with HB Stretch or Wide Zone from the same set to build a run-heavy series that forces defenders to respect zone flow in both directions.
Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs when the defense is not selling out for pass coverage.
