Zone Fake Jet is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Spread that sells jet motion across the formation before the QB rolls left off a zone run fake. The lone diagrammed route breaks outside toward the sideline as the QB works the rollout, giving him a quick outlet against defenders who bite on the run or motion. This is a play-action boot designed to hold linebackers and second level defenders with run fake and jet motion misdirection, functioning as a zone beater when defenders flow hard to the fake side. Primary read is the outside breaking route on the roll, with the QB progression starting on that receiver before considering tucking and running if the edge is unblocked.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, single high shells with linebackers stacked tight to the box are most vulnerable to the boot since they are geared to stop the run fake. Watch cornerback leverage on the play side, if he is playing outside contain technique the boot route has less room to work and the QB may need to hold the ball longer. Post-snap, key the flow of the linebackers, if they crash hard toward the jet motion and run fake, the boot side is wide open behind them. Look for a user controlled defender spying the QB on the rollout, that is the biggest threat to this concept since it takes away both the throw and the scramble lane. Against zone shells with linebackers sitting on hooks or curls, the outside breaking route can get squeezed, so be ready to check down or tuck it rather than force the throw into a sitting zone defender.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing with the jet action before the ball is even snapped, this is your key indicator of man versus zone if a defender follows the motion man across the formation. Call this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance since the play action fake needs run support respect to freeze the defense. Watch for defenders sitting flat footed at the snap, that tells you they read pass and you should get the ball out quickly on the boot route rather than extending the play. Pair this with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a drive so the defense commits to run fits, then dial up Zone Fake Jet to punish linebackers keying run flow. If the edge defender crashes hard on the fake, the QB can tuck and run off the rollout since the boot naturally clears that lane.
