RNS 60 H Y Option is a four man route concept out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that stretches the field vertically while leaving an option route underneath. Both outside receivers run straight seams up the numbers, the slot receiver runs a short option route breaking off the line, and the inline slot on the opposite side pushes vertically as well, giving you two go routes bookending an option read with no visible run blocking or play-action elements. This is a man beater at its core, since the option route is designed to sit down or break away from man leverage while the two vertical seams occupy the deep defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the option route in the shallow area before working outside to the seams if the underneath defender sinks or the safety cheats late.

Defensive Reads

Check for single high safety alignment presnap, since that tells you both seams are one on one and the option route becomes a pure checkdown rather than the primary target. Watch the depth of the slot defender covering the option route at the snap, because a hard press or tight man look means the option will break away quickly while a soft zone drop means it will sit down for an easy completion. Look for late-rotating safeties who bail from a two high shell into a single high robber technique, since that rotation is designed to take away the seam routes and force you into the option route. Identify blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, because the option route becomes your hot read and outlet against pressure when the offensive line cannot hold up. Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow hook zone or lurking near the option route, since that user can jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long before checking the verticals.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether you are facing man or zone leverage on the slot defender lined up over the option route, since his depth tells you whether to expect a quick sit or a speed cut away.

If the linebacker or nickel over the option route is playing tight man coverage, hot route the option to a quick out or in to create instant separation before the rush arrives.

Use this play on early downs or third and short, since the option route gives you a built in checkdown against blitz-heavy looks while the verticals punish any single high shell.
