Play diagram for Y Corner from Pistol Spread in Madden 27

Quick Reference

Breakdown

Y Corner out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel shows a four-man route concept with no run action. The Y (tight end/slot) runs a corner route from the middle of the formation, the outside receiver to that side clears out on a deep dig-style crossing route, and the backside receiver on the far left runs an outside break that turns into a deep dig across the field. The remaining receiver on the boundary runs a shallow drag that flattens toward the sideline underneath, giving a built-in checkdown against pressure. This is primarily a man beater because the Y corner route attacks the seam against a trailing linebacker or safety, but the crossing routes underneath also give it zone answers versus Cover 2 and Cover 3. Primary read progression starts with the Y corner route into the deep crosser, then works down to the shallow drag if the top of the defense clamps down on the corner route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the corner to the Y side, if he is aligned outside with no safety help over the top, the corner route wins immediately. Watch the middle linebacker depth, a linebacker sitting shallow signals zone drop responsibility and opens the deep crosser behind him. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if the single high safety cheats toward the deep crosser you get the corner route wide open in the void. This play struggles against a two high shell with underneath zone drops, since the corner route and deep crosser both run into the deep half safeties. User-controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the middle can jump the deep crosser, so bail out to the shallow drag if you see that defender flash across the field.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers and see if they widen with the Y before the snap, this tells you if you are getting man coverage on the tight end.

Attack this play on second and medium to second and long, the corner route needs room to develop and the deep crosser needs a full field to work with.

If you see a single high safety shell, prioritize the corner route immediately since the safety cannot help both hash marks.

Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a quick out if you are facing a Cover 2 shell that jumps underneath crossers, this gives you a fast sideline outlet.

Pair this with Y Stick or Quick Slants in your play-calling sequence so the defense respects the quick game before you hit them with the delayed corner route shot.
