Breakdown

RNS Hook is a five man route concept out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that stresses defenses vertically and horizontally in one shot. On the left, the outside receiver runs a deep go up the sideline while the inside receiver from that stack sits down on a hook route underneath in the flat, creating a natural high low read for the corner and flat defender. On the right side, the two receivers run a seam route up the numbers and a corner route breaking outside, giving you a smash concept away from the hook side. This is primarily a zone beater that also holds up against man thanks to the hook route sitting in soft spots, and the primary read progression starts left with the hook route underneath, works up to the deep go, then flips to the seam and corner combo on the boundary.

Defensive Reads

Presnap check safety depth, if both safeties are backed off past ten yards you are likely seeing a two high shell that favors the hook and seam combo over the deep go. Post snap watch the flat defender's drop, if he sinks too deep chasing the go route the hook sits wide open underneath for an easy completion. Against Cover 3, the middle linebacker's drop depth tells you if the seam route can split the zone, a shallow drop means the seam window closes fast. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the outside corner is where the deep go route wins most consistently, look for the corner playing tight press with no deep help rotating over. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking near the hook route, since that shallow underneath route is the first target defenders will jump if they read run and react route combos quickly.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify if the defense is showing two high or single high, since the seam and corner smash concept on the right is deadly against single high looks where the corner has to defend both levels alone.

If the defense shows Cover 3, target the hook route immediately since it sits right in the flat defender's zone drop window before he can fully sink.

Against man coverage, the deep go route on the left can win outside if your corner has no safety help over the top, so trust that route on early downs when you have shot potential.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short since the hook route gives you a quick underneath answer while the vertical routes keep linebackers honest.

Pair RNS Hook with Four Verticals and RNS Streak in the same formation to keep defenses guessing between an underneath answer and full field vertical shots, forcing safeties to hesitate on their run fits.
