RNS Hook is a five-man route concept out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that stretches the field vertically and horizontally in one shot. The backside receiver runs a deep go up the sideline while the inside receiver on that side breaks off a corner route from a stem that mirrors a vertical release, creating a natural high low read on that half of the field. On the play side, the outside receiver runs a seam up the numbers while the slot receiver works a shallow hook/hitch underneath, giving the quarterback a quick zone beating throw if the defense sits back. This is a Four Verts and Smash hybrid built to attack both man and zone coverage, with the primary read starting on the play side seam and hook combo before working backside to the corner and go.
Defensive Reads
Read the free safety pre-snap: if he cheats toward the seam or corner side, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 rotation and look to the hook route for the underneath answer. Watch the flat defender and curl-hook linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop from either indicates zone coverage that opens the hook route quickly. If the cornerback on the go route route bails immediately at the snap, that signals off man or Cover 2, so widen your eyes to the corner route breaking behind the deep half defender. Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in the hook zone or lurking in the intermediate middle, since that is the primary throw window and a smart user will jump it. Against man coverage with no safety help over the top, the deep go route on the backside becomes the highest value throw if your receiver has a clean release.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and medium when you expect zone coverage, since the hook route sits down for an easy completion against soft zone drops.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are deep at 10-plus yards you are likely seeing a two high shell, which favors the seam and corner routes splitting the safeties.
If the corner over the hook receiver is playing tight man coverage, hot route the hook into a quick out or slant to beat the leverage instantly.
Pair this play with Four Verticals in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the hook route without getting burned deep on the follow up call.
Against Cover 3, target the hook sitting in the zone seam between the flat defender and the middle linebacker, since that window opens fast on the snap.
