Zone Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that reads the run fit versus a quick perimeter throw. The backside receiver runs a slant while the frontside slot bubbles out to the flat, giving the QB a run/pass conflict read on the alley defender. The RB takes a give read up the middle if the box count stays clean, making this a true dual-read RPO rather than a straight screen or dropback pass.
Defensive Reads
Key the flat defender or slot corner pre-snap, if they are aligned outside leverage on the bubble receiver, sit on the route and drive it for a stop behind the line. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, a fast-flowing linebacker to the play side is reading the RPO and can blow up both the give and the bubble. Match this concept with an underneath zone or Cover 3 sky shell, the flat defender squatting on the bubble takes away the easy pitch and forces the run read. Press man coverage on the backside slant with inside leverage can bait the QB into a risky throw, use a user defender to jump the route if you see the RPO mesh point. Overloading the box with an extra run blitzer forces the QB to speed up his bubble read, so disguise blitz packages that show run late to catch the mesh point off guard.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and identify if the slot corner or overhang player is sitting inside to take away the run, since that is your bubble key.
If the defense shows soft zone with a linebacker sitting at depth, pull the bubble immediately instead of hesitating, the leverage is already won.
Use the slant as a hot route answer versus aggressive man press on the backside, it clears out fast against off coverage too.
Run this on early downs to keep defenses honest against the run threat, then dial up Zone Fake Jet or Read Option later in the series once the defense starts crashing down on the bubble.
Pair this with Quick Slants or Slant Bubble in the same personnel grouping to keep the defense guessing on which side the RPO key is triggered.
