Jet Pass Fk Zone lines up out of 10 personnel Pistol Spread with jet motion crossing the backfield presnap to sell the outside run action. Once the ball is snapped, the quarterback fakes the jet sweep handoff and pulls it back for a quick pass, with the diagram showing the lone route running a shallow drag from right to left just behind the line, working from the backfield toward the boundary. This is a play-action style jet fake pass designed as a quick zone beater, with the primary read being the shallow drag underneath as soon as it clears the line of scrimmage, giving the quarterback an easy answer against overaggressive linebacker flow.
Defensive Reads
Presnap, key the linebacker depth and eye discipline on the jet motion side, since aggressive flow toward the fake is what this play is designed to exploit. Look at safety alignment to confirm if the shell is two high or single high, as two high shells tend to leave the shallow drag open longer before defenders can react. Post snap, identify any user controlled defender spying the backfield or sitting in a shallow zone, since a disciplined underneath defender can jump the drag route immediately. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers home and against man coverage with a defender assigned directly to the motion man, so expect it to get shut down by Cover 3 sink or man match schemes that do not bite on the fake. Watch for a fast trigger blitz off the edge, since the quick pass timing leaves little room to escape if the quarterback does not get the ball out on rhythm.
Usage Tips
Use this call on early downs or short yardage when the defense has shown a tendency to bite on jet sweep motion and crash flow toward the fake. Watch presnap for linebackers cheating hard toward the jet motion side, since that flow is exactly what opens up the shallow drag underneath. Hot route the drag runner to sit if you see a zone defender sinking underneath, or send them vertical if the defense shows man coverage with no underneath help. Pair this call with Zone Fake Jet and HB Dive earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and linebackers get conditioned to flow hard, making the quick pass hit even bigger later in the game. Best used on second and short or first and ten to punish overpursuit without risking a long developing dropback.
