Breakdown

Slot Outside from Pistol Spread lines up two receivers to each side with no backfield help beyond the QB, making this a pure 10 personnel dropback pass. To the left the outside receiver runs a deep out while the inside slot receiver settles on a quick hitch underneath, giving the QB a high low read on that side. To the right the receiver runs a slant into the flat while the tight end style slot pushes vertically up the seam before working outside. This is a man beater built around leverage: the slant flat combo attacks man coverage defenders trying to squeeze the flat, while the out and hitch combo gives a natural rub against tight man technique. Primary read progression starts with the slant flat side since it develops fastest, then works back to the out breaking route if the flat defender sits underneath.

Defensive Reads

Look for cornerbacks in soft zone with linebackers sitting at depth, this indicates zone coverage and the out route on the boundary can get squeezed by an underneath zone defender sinking to that landmark. Watch the slot corner or nickel defender's initial step at the snap, if he opens up to jump the slant flat combo hard, look back immediately to the out and hitch side since the QB should have already started that read. Man coverage with no safety help over the top of the outside out route is the biggest tell to trust that throw, since the rub from the inside hitch route occupies underneath defenders. Blitz packages with five or six rushers void the middle of the field quickly, so if you see extra rushers crash off the edge, get the ball out fast on the slant flat since it beats blitz timing. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender sitting on the slant can bait a bad throw, if the flat defender squats immediately, come off that route and trust the deep out sitting behind him.

Usage Tips

Check the corner and slot corner alignment pre-snap, tight press man on both sides confirms this is your play since the rub concepts on both sides create natural separation.

Hot route the backside hitch into a quick slant if you see a single high safety rotating hard to the trips or bunch side, this keeps the concept balanced against rotation.

Use this on third and short or third and medium since the slant flat combo and hitch both live in the underneath passing windows and can convert quickly.

Pair this with Quick Slants or Speed Out from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game concepts, then hit them with Y Stick or Y Cross once they start jumping the short routes.

Snap this quickly out of no huddle after showing a run look from HB Dive or HB Slam, the pass timing punishes linebackers still reading run fits.
