Breakdown

Slot Outside is a quick pass concept out of Pistol Spread with 10 personnel that isolates two three man route combos to each side. To the left, the outside receiver runs an out route while the slot receiver runs a slant flat into the vacated space underneath, and on the right side the receiver from the slot bends inside then breaks back out on a hitch while the outside receiver stems vertically before working back to the flat. The offensive line stays in to protect on a quick five step drop, making this a true timing based man beater designed to attack off coverage and isolated matchups. The primary read progression starts with the left side out and slant flat combo, then works to the right side hitch and flat combo if the boundary corner sits on top of the out route.

Defensive Reads

Check the leverage of both outside cornerbacks before the snap, since inside leverage tells you the out and hitch routes will have room to sit down against man coverage. Watch the flat defenders and linebackers at the snap, because if they widen quickly to jump the slant flat route, the quarterback should look immediately to the opposite side hitch and flat combo. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, since single high man coverage (Cover 1 or Cover 3 man) leaves the flat routes vulnerable to a user controlled linebacker sitting underneath. Against zone coverage such as Cover 2 or Cover 4, the hitch and slant flat routes settle into soft spots but require a quick trigger from the quarterback before zone defenders can close the throwing window. Beware of user controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position over the slant flat route, since a disciplined user linebacker can jump the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or in third and short situations where the defense is likely to play man coverage with tight cushions. Pre-snap, look for cornerbacks lined up inside or with outside leverage on the receivers, since that alignment opens up the out and hitch routes immediately at the snap. If the corner is playing off with a deep cushion, hot route the slant flat receiver into a quick slant to speed up the throw and beat a potential blitz. Pair this play with Speed Out and Quick Slants from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between out breaking and slant based concepts, since the mirrored pre-snap look forces linebackers and corners to respect multiple leverage points. Against aggressive man press defenses, consider calling Slants Y Out on the following snap to counter with an inside breaking concept once the defense adjusts to the out and hitch combo.
