RNS Hitches out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel sends four receivers vertical off the line before three of them settle into hitch routes at a shallow depth while the fourth, the outside receiver to the strength side, runs a streak straight up the seam to occupy the deep defenders. The two inside receivers and the backside outside receiver break down into hitches, giving the quarterback quick, high-percentage throws against soft coverage or off corners. This is a zone beater designed to attack cushion and underneath voids, with the primary read starting on the streak to see if it pulls a safety before working down to the nearest hitch based on leverage and cushion.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high shells presnap, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 tend to leave the hitch windows soft underneath and this play thrives against those shells. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow zone drops from the backers can jump the inside hitches and bait a turnover if the QB stares them down. Man coverage with underneath help, like Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an aggressive robber, takes away the hitches and forces you to rely on the streak for a big play or check down. Key the flow of the safety on the streak route, if he stays deep and outside the QB should feel comfortable working the short hitches without fear of a lurking interception. Watch for user blitzers off the edge, since the shallow hitch depth means the QB needs a clean pocket to get through his full progression before the pass rush arrives.

Usage Tips

Check the cornerback depth before the snap, if you see soft press or corners playing off at seven yards or more the hitches are already open for an easy completion.

Use the streak route as a clock read, if the safety bites down on the hitches you can hit the vertical shot for an explosive gain.

This play pairs well with Quick Slants and Speed Out in the same set, since the mirrored route depth forces the defense to respect both the quick game and the vertical shot without changing your presnap motion tendencies.

Ideal on second and medium or third and short, since the hitch depth typically sits right around the sticks and gives the QB a rhythm throw with minimal risk.

Against man coverage, hot route one of the inside hitches into a slant or drag to create natural separation, since standing hitches versus tight man leverage are low percentage throws.
