Breakdown

Read Option out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel is a zone read run play built around the quarterback keep or give mechanic. The line blocks a zone scheme to the play side while the QB reads the play side end, either handing off to the HB on the give path or pulling it to attack the edge himself, with no receiver routes shown in this diagram since it is a pure run design. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression is the QB keying the unblocked defensive end before deciding to give or keep.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on snap the QB should pull and keep to the edge. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the end sits and a linebacker replaces him on the edge, this negates the keep read and the QB should give inside instead. Check box count before the snap, stacked boxes with eight or more defenders shut this play down since there is no extra gap advantage for the QB run. Look for user defenders spying the quarterback, if a linebacker or safety is clearly keying the mesh point rather than flowing to the run fit, expect them to jump the keep lane. Man coverage on the perimeter with no underneath help favors the keep since edge defenders are often occupied in coverage, while zone shells with disciplined end play tend to force the give.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the play side defensive end into declaring his assignment before the snap so your read is easier to execute post-snap.

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since this play thrives when the defense is in nickel or dime personnel and cannot outnumber the run front.

Pair Read Option with RPO Alert Dive Out or RPO Alert Dive Hitches in the same formation so the defense has to respect both the give and the perimeter pass option, forcing linebackers to hesitate.

Sell the mesh point fully by holding the animation as long as possible, this manipulates user linebackers who try to jump the give and opens the keep lane.

Save this play for early down and manageable distance situations where you want to control tempo, and mix in HB Dive or Wide Zone from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the read.
