Read Option out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel is a true zone read run play with no wide receiver routes shown in the diagram, just four vertical splits and the QB/HB mesh point at the snap. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme flowing right, while the QB reads the play side defensive end to decide whether to hand off on inside zone or pull and attack the edge himself. This is a run-first concept designed to exploit unblocked edge defenders and gap discipline, not a man or zone pass beater.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify if the defense is stacked in the box with six or more defenders, since that alignment is built to shut down this zone read concept. Key the play side defensive end assignment on the snap, if he is unblocked and crashes hard he is reading the mesh correctly and forces the QB to pull. Watch for a scrape exchange from the play side linebacker, where he replaces the crashing end on the QB, this is the primary counter to zone read and takes away the keeper. User the play side defensive end or a linebacker and spy the mesh point manually to blow up both the handoff and the keeper option. Look for defenses bringing an overload blitz from the backside, since the zone blocking scheme is vulnerable to unblocked backside pressure that cannot be read by the QB.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only call this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since the diagram shows no extra receiver blocking help. Watch the play side defensive end alignment, if he crashes down hard on the mesh point pull the ball and attack the edge, if he sits wide hand it off on inside zone. Use this in early down and manageable situations like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest against your dropback passing game. Pair this with Speed Option and HB Dive from the same formation so the defense cannot key on run tendencies out of Pistol Spread. Mix in PA Boot or Zone Fake Jet after establishing Read Option so linebackers start biting on run action, opening up play action shots.
