Breakdown

Quick Slot Out lines up in Pistol Spread with 10 personnel and attacks the flat with a quick timing route from the left slot receiver, who runs a short out to the numbers behind a designed rub from the outside receiver on the vertical release. On the right side the two receivers run a crossing combo, with the outside receiver breaking in and the slot receiver crossing underneath to the opposite flat, creating natural picks against man coverage. The primary read is the quick out to the left slot receiver, with the right side cross combo as the secondary progression if the flat defender jumps the out route.

Defensive Reads

Watch for press man coverage on the left slot receiver, since the rub route from the outside receiver is designed to clear that defender and create instant separation on the out. Key the flat defender on the left side, if he sits and reads the quarterback he can jump the out route and blow up the primary progression. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, the crossing combo on the right side has room to work underneath the deep zone drops, so track the linebacker depth after the snap. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone on the right side, since that is the biggest threat to the crossing routes. Overload blitzes from the defense can be a problem, since the quick out is the only real answer if the offensive line cannot pick up extra rushers in time.

Usage Tips

Fire the quick out to the left slot receiver as soon as the ball is snapped since this route beats man coverage almost instantly off the rub concept.

Check the corner depth pre-snap, if the corner is playing off you have an easy pitch and catch for a quick five to seven yard gain.

Use this play on third and short or second and medium when you need a safe, high percentage completion against blitz-heavy defenses.

If the defense shows zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3, work the crossing combo on the right side since those routes settle into soft spots between zone defenders.

Pair this play with Speed Out or Quick Slants from the same set to keep the defense guessing on quick game concepts without changing your formation tendencies.
