Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field, with the two outside receivers releasing straight up the numbers and the two slot receivers pushing seams before angling outside the safeties, while the running back checks the middle before releasing on a vertical option route up the pipe. The five linemen sit in a max protect pocket, giving the QB a clean vertical stretch read against the secondary. This is a pure man beater and zone beater in one, designed to stress two deep safeties horizontally and vertically, with the primary progression starting on the seam route to the field side before working to the backside vertical and finally the checkdown from the back.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, since two safeties playing shallow or tight together signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tips you toward the seam voids. If both safeties are aligned deep and split wide, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 and prepare to work the middle seam route hard. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in the deep middle lurk, which can jump the inside seam route and bait a costly interception if the QB stares it down. Key the linebacker drops, since if the middle linebacker sprints to the deep middle instead of covering the running back's vertical release, that checkdown becomes a wide open outlet against zone blitz pressure. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability against this play, since any blown coverage or missed jam on the outside releases turns into an explosive gain.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since this route combo is built to exploit any coverage that cannot get enough width or depth to cover four verticals. Against Cover 2, target the seam routes in the void between the corner and safety before the safety can rotate over the top. Against Cover 3, work the middle seam route against the deep third defender since one seam will always beat single high zone drops. Use the running back's vertical release as a checkdown against zone blitz looks where the middle of the field opens up after the linebackers vacate. Pair this play with Y Stick or Quick Slants earlier in a series to bait linebackers into shallow drops, then hit Four Verticals once the defense starts jumping underneath routes.
