Zone Alert X Smoke lines up out of 10 personnel Pistol Spread with the X receiver running a quick bubble style smoke route to the flat off a short motion, giving the QB an instant outside throw. The inside slot receiver runs an under route crossing back toward the numbers as a secondary option, while the two remaining receivers to the field side release vertically to occupy the corners and safety. This is a quick game screen concept designed as a man beater, with the primary read progression starting on the X smoke to the boundary and working inside to the slot under route if the flat defender jumps the screen.

Defensive Reads

Key the boundary corner pre-snap, if he is playing off with soft outside leverage the smoke route is nearly automatic and hard to defend in real time. Watch for a user controlled defender flying downhill on the smoke route, since this is the primary counter to shut this concept down. Look at the flat and underneath zone defenders after the snap, a linebacker or nickel who sinks under the smoke can force the QB to reset to the inside under route. Cover 3 with a hard charging corner or a quick trigger nickel blitz off the edge is the best answer to this play since it eliminates the easy throw before it develops. Man coverage with inside leverage on the X receiver invites a big picture play here, so respect any defense that shows press man pre-snap and disguises a jump on the route.

Usage Tips

Throw the X smoke almost immediately off the snap since it is designed to punish soft corners playing off coverage or aggressive man defenders who bite on the release. Check the flat and corner pre-snap, if you see a corner sitting inside with outside leverage or a hard press call, this route wins instantly to the boundary. Use this play on 3rd and short or 2nd and manageable to keep the offense ahead of schedule with a low risk explosive gain. Pair this with Zone Alert Bubble or Quick Slot Out in the same set to keep defenders guessing between bubble and smoke concepts out of the same Pistol Spread look. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 shell with the corner sinking deep, hot route the X into a hitch to hold the ball just a beat longer before releasing it.
