RNS Switch Smash is a Pistol Spread pass concept built off a smash combo on the boundary and a switch release from the two receivers to the play side. The number one receiver runs a corner route up top while the number two receiver settles underneath on a quick hitch, forming the classic smash read against Cover 2. On the backside, the two receivers cross paths at the snap with a switch release, both climbing vertically to occupy the far side of the field and hold safety help away from the smash combo. This is a zone beater, specifically designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progression starting at the corner route over the top of the flat defender and working down to the hitch underneath if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify two safeties split evenly with corners playing off, this is a strong indicator of Cover 2 and the smash combo will be tough to defend without a robber underneath. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the hitch route the corner route is open behind him, if he sits at depth to jump the corner the hitch is open immediately. Key the backside safety on the switch release, aggressive user movement to that side signals man coverage or a rotation to Cover 3, which opens the smash side even further. Cover 3 with press corners and a deep middle safety can shut this down if the corner route runner gets jammed at the line, disrupting his timing against the flat defender. Watch for user blitz pressure off the edge, since Pistol alignment gives less time before the corner route breaks, a delayed blitz or nano package can force a checkdown before the smash combo develops.

Usage Tips

Attack this play against Cover 2 shells where the corner has to choose between the hitch and the corner route, since the smash concept is unguardable if the flat defender sits low.

Check safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split wide with cornerbacks pressed at the line, the smash side should win immediately on the corner route.

Use the switch release backside as a clear out to occupy any rotating safety or lurking linebacker in zone, which opens up extra grass for the corner route if the defense rotates coverage post snap.

Hot route the switch receivers into deep verticals if you diagnose Cover 3 or Cover 4 pre snap, forcing the cornerback on that side to stay home instead of bracketing the smash concept.
