Breakdown

PA Boot is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that pulls the quarterback to the boundary while the backside receiver runs a deep corner route off a hard break upfield. The frontside features a drag and an out breaking underneath along the boot path plus a deep out breaking receiver climbing to the sideline, giving the quarterback layered options from short to deep as he rolls. The primary read progression starts with the underneath drag near the boot action, works to the intermediate out, then to the deep corner route on the backside if the quarterback has time and the pocket edge holds.

Defensive Reads

Key the flow of the linebackers at the snap, since PA Boot only creates the intended run fake advantage if they bite on the play action and open running lanes for the drag and out routes underneath. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the rollout lane, as this is the biggest threat to shutting down the quarterback's ability to extend the play and hit routes late in the progression. Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells before the snap, since the deep corner route on the backside can be effective against a single deflecting cornerback with no safety help arriving in time. Look for a hard edge blitz or contain rush from the boot side, since PA Boot is vulnerable to defenders crashing the boundary before the quarterback can get outside the tackle box. Against Cover 2 or Cover 6, watch the corner defender's depth since a shallow flat defender can undercut the deep out and force the quarterback to check down to the drag route instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or short yardage third downs when the defense expects run based on personnel and formation, since the play action fake is more effective against light boxes. Check the safety alignment pre-snap and if you see two high safeties the deep corner route is more likely to sit down in a soft spot behind underneath defenders, so prioritize that shot. Hot route the drag into a deeper crosser against zone heavy defenses to stretch the field horizontally away from the boot flow. Pair this call with HB Dive or HB Slam earlier in a drive to sell the run fake and get linebackers stepping up before dialing up PA Boot. Against aggressive man coverage teams, use the rollout to buy extra time and let the corner route work against a trailing cornerback who has to fight through traffic.
