PA Boot from Pistol Spread is a play-action rollout concept that sells the run fake before the QB works to the boot side. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route from the numbers up the sideline while the middle slot works a deep in that settles across the field, giving the QB a two-level read away from the rollout. On the boot side, the outside receiver runs a shallow drag underneath while the tight end (or attached receiver) climbs vertically before breaking outside on a corner route, creating a natural high-low read as the QB rolls out. This is a play-action man beater that also stresses zone defenders on the boot side flat, with the primary read progression starting on the flat drag, climbing to the corner route, and coming back to the deep in-cutter if the pocket collapses or the boot side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker flow at the snap, since heavy crash toward the run fake confirms the defense is vulnerable to the boot side flat and corner combo. Check the boot side cornerback depth before the snap, because a corner playing tight man coverage can get beaten by the vertical release into the corner route, while a corner sitting off in zone should trigger a quicker throw to the drag. Identify Cover 1 or Cover 3 shells since the single high safety often cannot cover both the backside deep in and the boot side vertical threat, forcing a coverage bust. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB on the rollout, since a disciplined spy or contain defender can shut down the boot action and force a forced throw into the flat. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with safeties sitting on the deep in route or corner route, since those coverages take away the top of the progression and force the checkdown to the drag underneath.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or manageable third downs when the defense has shown run tendencies out of Pistol looks, since the play action fake needs linebackers biting to open throwing lanes.

Roll out with the QB using the right stick to extend the play and buy time for the corner route to develop on the boot side, but be ready to check down to the drag route quickly against fast pursuit.

Identify single high safety looks pre-snap since the deep in route from the backside slot will have room to work against Cover 3 or Cover 1 defenders who bite on the run action.

Pair this call with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a series to condition the defense to respect the run fake, which sets up the boot action to hit for explosive yardage.

Hot route the backside corner route receiver into a hitch or comeback if you see a corner sitting deep in Cover 4, since that route can get taken away by a defender staying at home.
