Jet Touch Pass is a quick-hitting perimeter play out of Pistol Spread 10 personnel that sends a jet motion man across the formation for a touch pass behind the line of scrimmage, with the QB flipping it to him just outside the box. The offensive line shows a run blocking look, pulling to seal the edge and create a lane for the jet man to turn the corner, while a single receiver crosses shallow underneath as an outlet. This is fundamentally a gimmick run beater and zone beater designed to get the ball to your speed player in space immediately, with the primary read being the jet motion man on the touch pass unless the flow defender crashes down too fast, in which case the QB can look to the shallow crosser.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the second level defenders at the snap, if linebackers or the flat corner crash hard toward the jet motion before the ball is thrown, user up a defender to squeeze the edge and blow up the touch pass in the backfield. This play struggles against defenses that play contain and stay disciplined on the edge, since the blocking is designed to widen a lane that disappears if the defense does not overreact. Check safety depth pre-snap, if the defense shows two deep safeties who stay home, an underneath defender can sit on the touch pass and jump it for a big hit or turnover. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined flat defenders are the toughest matchup for this concept since the flat zone defender can read and react to the jet motion without biting. Man coverage with an aggressive slot defender pressing the shallow crosser can take away the outlet route, forcing the QB to force the touch pass into a crowded lane.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs to keep defenses honest against your run game since the jet motion mirrors your outside zone and jet sweep action.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If the corner or safety flies down hard on the jet motion, this play gets stuffed for a loss, so bait aggressive defenses first with actual jet sweeps or Zone Fake Jet before dialing this up.

Hot route the shallow crosser to a speed out or drag if you are facing a defense that reads jet motion tendencies, this gives you a quick answer to bail out of the touch pass.

Pair this with HB Slip Screen and RPO Alert Dive Out in the same series so defenders cannot key on the jet action without opening up interior run lanes.

Best used in short yardage or on early downs against defenses playing base zone shells, since aggressive man coverage with underneath robbers can jump the touch pass route before it develops.
