Texan Deep In comes out of Shotgun Trips TE and features a five man route concept with play action mixed in on the diagram. The three receivers to the trips side run a deep in from the outside receiver, a corner route from the slot, and a go route from the number three receiver stacking vertical stress on the deep third or deep half. The tight end runs a shallow drag under the traffic while the running back releases to the flat opposite the trips, giving a natural flood read from underneath to deep. This is a levels and flood concept built as a Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater with man beater traits, and the primary progression is deep in from the outside receiver first, working down to the drag and flat if the defense sits on the deep in.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they widen with the tight end drag it opens a throwing lane for the deep in behind them. Key the cornerback over the outside receiver, if he sinks late or bites on the play action fake the deep in will be wide open in the void. Identify the safety rotation post snap, Cover 3 rotation to the trips side signals the quarterback should hit the deep in early before the rotation completes. Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the deep in window, that is the main threat that shuts this play down, if you see a defender spying that zone check down to the tight end drag or flat. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the go route can bait a quarterback into a costly deep shot, so respect the go route as a decoy unless it is clearly one on one.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the deep safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties sitting wide the deep in against Cover 4 is your first target since the corner route and go route occupy the safeties.

Against single high looks, throw the deep in with anticipation before the free safety can rotate over the top, this play was built to punish Cover 3 rotation.

Use the tight end drag as your checkdown when the underneath defenders bail out to cover the deep in, it is money against zone drops that overplay the flood.

Pair this play with Deep In or Deep ln from the same set to keep the defense guessing on which side the flood is coming from, since both plays share nearly identical route shells but flip stress.

On third and medium, call this against nickel or dime personnel that shows soft zone shells, the deep in window opens up fast against off man too if the corner does not jump the route.
