Breakdown

HB Angle out of Shotgun Trips TE lines up three receivers to the left running a vertical stack (deep dig sitting under a clear-out vertical and an out route breaking underneath) while the backside single receiver runs a deep comeback to hold the corner. The HB releases out of the backfield on an angle route, breaking outside then working back inside against the flow of the pass rush, which is the built-in man beater versus linebackers who struggle to mirror the change of direction. Pass protection is a slide scheme with the line sealing the point of attack so the QB has time to work through the angle route as the primary read against man coverage before progressing to the trips side breaking routes if it is zone.

Usage Tips

Key the middle linebacker before the snap, if he is aligned tight to the box the angle route to the HB will be wide open on the release since most zone linebackers will not carry the running back through the wheel of the angle

Use this on third and short or in the red zone when defenses are more likely to bring man pressure or blitz packages, the HB angle route punishes blitzing linebackers who vacate their zone drops

Hot route the backside single receiver into a slant if you see press man coverage, that gives you a quick alert if the corner jumps the angle route

Pair this play call with 45 Quick Base or Slot Quick Flat earlier in a drive so the defense respects quick game and sits back, then hit them with the angle route out of the backfield for a big gain against overaggressive linebackers

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, progress off the angle route quickly and look to the deep comeback route on the backside since the flat defender will often widen with the HB and open a passing window
