Breakdown

Switch Y In is a trips-side switch release concept out of Shotgun Trips TE that creates natural rub traffic to shake man coverage. The two inside trips receivers cross paths at the snap, with the middle receiver breaking into a deep in route across the field while the outside trips receiver bends underneath into a shallow crossing route, and the third trips receiver clears out deep to the opposite sideline to occupy the safety. The backside X runs a deep in as well while the RB releases into the flat off a chip on the edge defender, giving the QB a two-level in route stack on the trips side as the primary read with the flat route as the checkdown against underneath pressure.

Defensive Reads

Watch the deep safety alignment before the snap, since a single high safety often means man coverage underneath which the switch release is built to defeat. Key on the underneath linebackers and their zone drop depth, because if they sink hard into the in routes they will vacate the flat for the RB. Identify user controlled defenders lurking near the trips side switch release, since a smart user can jump the crossing routes if they read the concept early. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, which pressures the QB before the deep in route develops and forces an early checkdown to the flat. Against zone coverage such as Cover 3 or Cover 4, sit the in routes on top of the underneath zone defenders and expect the deep in route to work against the seam if the corner sinks too deep.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage pre-snap since the switch release at the top of trips is designed to create natural picks that stall press or man defenders.

If the defense shows two high safeties, target the deep in route from the middle trips receiver since the switch action will typically win against man and the void underneath zone can be exploited too.

Use the RB flat route as your answer against a hard blitz or when the underneath defenders sink into the in routes, since it clears out quickly and provides a safe outlet.

Hot route the backside X into a quick out or slant if you see the defense rolling coverage away from the trips side to keep a threat on the boundary.

Pair this play with Slants or Curl Flat from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the deeper in route concept, and mix in Verticals to punish teams that start jumping the in routes.
