Breakdown

QB Zone out of Shotgun Trips TE is a designed QB run that reads as a zone blocking scheme with the QB as the primary ball carrier. The diagram shows three receivers stacked to the trips side running vertical stems to clear out defenders, while the offensive line executes zone steps and the HB flares to the flat as a checkdown or lead blocker option. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the QB reading the zone blocking flow, picking his gap based on the defensive line's leverage, and getting skinny through the alley created by the o-line's combo blocks.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is stacked in the box or spread out with two-high safeties, since a light box with safeties bailing into deep zones is exactly what this run wants to see. Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker to the trips side: if they crash hard on the mesh point trying to squeese the QB run, that is a sign the defense is selling out to stop this exact concept. Post-snap, key the linebackers' first step: if they flow hard with the zone action instead of staying patient, there is a cutback lane available behind them. This play struggles against attached defenders who stay home on containment or defenses running a scrape exchange, where the DE stays wide and a linebacker replaces him in the alley. User-controlled defenders spying the QB or a DT executing a designed A-gap shoot blitz can blow this play up before the zone blocking even develops, so avoid calling it against known QB spy tendencies.

Usage Tips

Run this play on early downs, ideally first or second and short to medium, when the defense shows base personnel without extra DBs on the field. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box, this is a green light run. Use the trips side receivers as decoys to pull safeties out of the run fit, especially against man coverage where the corners will trail vertically and vacate run support. Pair this with Read Option and Speed Option from the same set so the defense has to respect the mesh point every single snap, which slows down edge defenders crashing down on the zone run. If the defense starts loading the box after seeing QB Zone once, counter with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble to make linebackers hesitate and stay honest.
