Verts Y Delay lines up from Shotgun Trips TE personnel and sends three vertical routes from the trips side straight upfield to stress the deep thirds, while the backside X runs a fourth vertical from the opposite numbers. The Y (TE) releases late on a delay route out of the backfield area, sneaking through the middle of the field after the initial rush flow clears out. The HB runs an out route to the flat as a checkdown or flat beater, giving this play a four verts shell with a delay wrinkle, and it functions as a strong Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater with the delay route as the primary answer against zone drops, while the four verts stress man coverage on the outside. Primary progression starts outside to the trips verts against man, then works to the Y delay as it clears the linebacker level against zone.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties tipping Cover 2 or Cover 4 signal the Y delay will be the primary answer. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who bite on the verts open a direct throwing lane to the delayed Y route in the middle of the field. Man coverage with no help over the top on the trips side gets exposed by the outside vertical routes, especially against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitzes. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone can jump the Y delay route, so read their positioning before committing to that throw. Disguised zone blitzes that show blitz then drop into zone coverage can bait an early throw to the verts, so hold the ball an extra beat to confirm the true coverage shell before releasing.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or one high, since this route concept punishes both shells differently.
Against Cover 2, key the Y delay route since it sits in the hole between the underneath zone droppers and the deep safeties, and it will be open once the linebackers flow with the initial verts.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 1 man, work outside to the trips verts first, targeting the seam route that splits the safety and the outside corner leverage.
Use hot routes to convert the HB flat route into a check release or block if you need extra protection versus five and six man pressure looks.
Pair this play with Curl Flat or Slot Quick Flat earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then hit this same formation with Verts Y Delay to expose the vacated middle zone.
