Defensive Reads
Watch for a linebacker or slot defender shadowing the HB motion pre-snap, that confirms man coverage and tells you the swing route wins immediately. Key the flat zone defender post-snap, if he sinks or widens late the swing has a soft window for an easy completion. Look for overload blitzes to the swing side, the shuffle protection can get beat by a numbers disadvantage on that edge, so know your checkdown timing. Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap HB motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if a linebacker or safety follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and the swing will be wide open.
This play shines on third and short or second and medium when defenses are geared up to stop the pass downfield and leave underneath flat routes uncovered.
