X Spot out of Shotgun Trips TE is a classic Cover 3 beater built around the Spot concept, combining a quick out, a spot/hitch underneath, and a corner or dig route working behind it to layer the zone. The trips side creates a natural triangle stretch on the flat defender and curl/hook players while the backside X works an isolated route against single coverage. Blocking is standard pass protection with the back available to check release, and the primary read progression starts with the flat defender to the spot route, then climbs to the corner or dig depending on how the underneath defenders squeeze the throwing lanes.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the strong safety alignment over the trips side, if he is walked down near the box expect man coverage or a Cover 1 robber look Post-snap, key the flat defender first since he determines whether the spot route or the flat route comes open, if he sits on the spot the flat is wide open underneath Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow curl zone, they can jump the spot route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down This play struggles against Cover 4 quarters with disciplined underneath zone drops since the extra deep defender can help squeeze the corner route read Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers with man coverage behind them can beat this play quickly since the protection is standard five man pass pro, so check the A gaps and slot blitz threats before the snap
Usage Tips
Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see two deep safeties with off corners you are likely facing Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone and this play is a strong go to
Use the trips side triangle to attack Cover 3 sky and buzz variations since the flat, spot, and corner routes occupy three defenders across two zones, forcing a hole in the defense
If the defense shows man coverage with a single high safety, hot route the spot route into a quick out or slant to speed up the throw against man beaters are not the strength of this concept
Pair X Spot with Verticals or China Y Post from the same Trips TE set to keep the defense honest on early downs, then come back to X Spot on 2nd and medium once the defense starts jumping the underneath routes
Best used on 2nd or 3rd and short to medium since the quick game nature of the spot concept lets you take what the defense gives you underneath without needing a deep shot
