Breakdown

Mtn Bench aligns out of Shotgun Trips TE and shows a four man route concept designed to attack the flat to deep third relationship on the field side. The inside trips receiver runs a bench route sitting flat outside the numbers, the middle trips receiver clears vertically up the seam toward the corner, and the outermost trips receiver bends across the field on a deep crosser. The backside X runs an out breaking route to the flat, giving the quarterback a natural high low read from the flat defender to the deep crosser. This is a zone beater that punishes cloud and squat coverage by stretching the flat defender horizontally while the crosser works behind him, with the primary progression starting at the bench route in the flat before working up to the crossing route over the middle.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the cornerback depth on the trips side, if he is sitting off in a soft shell he is keying the bench route and you should look to the crosser or seam instead. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he widens with the bench route immediately you have space to hit the crossing route working behind him. Identify robber or lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field since they can jump the deep crossing route if the quarterback holds it too long. Man coverage with a defender chasing the motion across the formation opens up the bench route immediately since the defender has to fight through traffic to stay in phase. Cover 3 defenses that roll the safety down to the trips side will struggle to cover both the bench route and the deep seam breaking to the corner, so hold your eyes on the seam runner if the flat defender bails to the deep third.

Usage Tips

Use motion pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, since a defender following the motion man across the formation confirms man coverage and tells you to look at the crosser instead of the bench route.

Attack this play on second and medium to third and short situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that leave the flat and intermediate crosser open.

If the corner squats hard on the bench route, hot route the deep seam runner to sit down or peek the crosser immediately since the flat defender is sinking to take away the underneath option.

Pair this play with Mtn RPO Read Flat or Mtn PA Y Corner in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick flat throw and the deeper shot off similar formation and motion.

Snap the ball quickly against blitz heavy defenses since the quick developing bench route gives the quarterback a fast outlet before pressure arrives off the edge.
