Verticals out of Shotgun Trips TE sends four receivers vertically to stretch the defense sideline to sideline, with the three trips receivers running seam and go routes off the ball and the backside single WR pushing an outside vertical. The lone RB stays in to check the protection before releasing on a shallow drag, giving the QB a rhythm outlet if the verts are covered deep. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack single high safeties and overload zone drops, with the primary read starting on the inside seam from trips before working outside to the boundary go route.
Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 with a deep third or deep half leave seams exposed to the trips verticals. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop or blitz shows man coverage underneath and opens throwing lanes for the seam route before the safety can rotate over. Track the nickel or slot corner leverage in trips, outside shade means the inside seam wins immediately, inside shade means the go route on the boundary is the shot play. Look for a user controlled deep safety sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, that defender can rob the inside seam if the QB stares it down too long. Beware two high shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined deep defenders, since four verticals into a soft two deep shell can get squeezed and force a checkdown to the RB.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one high safety or a rotated Cover 3 shell this play has a numbers advantage against the deep zones.
Key on the slot corner and nickel defender in trips, if they show hard outside leverage the inside seam will sit down in the void for an easy explosive gain.
Use this on early downs or third and long when you need a chunk play, since all four verticals take time to develop and are vulnerable to a quick blitz.
Hot route the RB into a checkdown flat route against Cover 2 if the safeties squeeze the seams, giving you a built in answer versus a two high shell.
Pair this with Deep In or Curls X Go from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical stress and horizontal in cuts off identical Trips TE alignment.
