Breakdown

Cheat Inside Zone is a shotgun run play out of the Trips TE set that hands the ball off on an inside zone track with the offensive line stepping in unison and the fullback or motion man cheating across to seal the edge. The diagram shows the backfield motion sweeping from left to right before the snap, with the offensive line blocking down and the running back reading the double team blocks up front to find the crease. This is a run play built to attack gaps between the tackles, and the primary read progression is a frontside to backside zone read where the runner presses the play side hole first, then cuts back if the backside cutback lane opens up against overpursuing linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Watch the defensive line alignment before the snap, a shaded nose or four technique on the play side can clog the primary running lane immediately. Key the play side linebacker's first step, if he crashes hard downhill this play gets stopped for a loss, if he hesitates or flows late the crease opens. Identify base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with light boxes as the best shells to attack, since inside zone struggles against stacked eight man fronts with an extra run blitzer. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the mesh point or shooting a gap on a delayed blitz, which can blow up the zone track before the back reaches the line. Check safety depth and rotation, if a safety cheats down into the box pre-snap that is a strong indicator of run support and you should consider checking out of the play.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety, which tips whether you are facing man or zone principles up front.

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up your RPO and play action shots later in the drive.

If the defense stacks the box with eight or more defenders, check to a hot route or audible into a perimeter throw instead of forcing the zone run.

Pair Cheat Inside Zone with Reload RPO Zone Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run fit and the bubble screen off the same look.

Mix in Read Option and Read Option Bubble from this set on early downs so linebackers cannot sit on the inside zone track and crash down every snap.
