Breakdown

Read Option Dummy is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Trips TE that uses a dummy mesh point to hold the defense before the ball carrier attacks the edge. The offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme up front while the QB reads the play side end or overhang defender to decide whether to hand off or pull and attack outside. This is a run play, not an RPO, so the primary read progression is entirely pre-programmed on the give read, meaning you as the user simply pick the gap based on how the second level flows and the frontside edge defender reacts.

Defensive Reads

Look at the defensive end or edge player aligned over the tackle before the snap, if he is crashing hard down the play design wants you to bounce outside Check linebacker depth, stacked linebackers sitting at five yards or deeper are a green light since they have more ground to close before the mesh point Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high with the strong safety cheating toward the trips bunch opens up the backside cutback lane Watch for a nano blitz off the edge, this play struggles against fast overload blitzes since the dummy read cannot actually option off a crashing defender Beware heavy fronts and run blitzes with three or four down linemen crashing gaps, stacked boxes with eight in the box shut this play down completely

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only call this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit

Attack the play side that has the natural leverage, usually away from the trips bunch where defenders are spread out in space

Use your left stick to press the hole hard and let the zone blocking climb to the second level before committing to a lane

Pair this with Reload RPO Zone Alert Bubble and RPO Alert Bubble in the same set so defenses respect the perimeter and cannot sell out on the run fit

Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when defensive coordinators are still guessing personnel and coverage shell

Motion the trips receiver pre-snap to bait linebackers into showing blitz or man leverage before the snap
