HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Trips TE releases the running back to the flat behind a wall of screen blockers while the three trips receivers push vertical and clear the underneath zone. The two outside trips receivers run straight vertical stems and the third trips receiver runs an out breaking route to the sideline, dragging linebackers and corners downfield to open space for the screen. The primary read is the HB in the flat immediately after the snap, this is a designed screen play meant to bait pass rushers and beat aggressive man and zone blitz pressure by getting blockers out in front of the tailback.
Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners pressed on the trips receivers, since man defenders will often bite hard on the vertical releases and vacate the screen lane. Watch for a defensive lineman or linebacker sitting at home plate depth without rushing, this is a screen defender or spy who will jump the HB Slip Screen for a loss. Post snap, user controlled defenders who peek into the backfield instead of covering their route responsibility are the biggest threat to this concept, take away the easy blocking angles if you see this. Zone coverages with linebackers dropping to intermediate depth without eyeing the backfield are the most vulnerable, since they open the lane for the screen blockers. Blitz heavy defensive calls that send extra rushers off the edge are exactly what this screen is designed to punish, so expect the play to hit big against Cover 0 or man blitz packages.
Call this on early downs or third and short when the defense shows heavy pressure looks or overload blitzes to the trips side.
Check the box count before the snap, if you see five or six defenders crashing the line of scrimmage this screen has a much higher chance of hitting big.
Use the trips vertical releases as clearout routes, do not check them down early, let them occupy the second level defenders so the screen lane stays open.
Pair this with Read Option Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting quick perimeter throws, then hit them with the slip screen when they overplay speed to the flat.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone teams that spy the running back, since screen defenders sitting at the line of scrimmage will blow this up before the blockers get set.
