Shuffle Mtn Levels runs jet or shuffle motion across the backfield pre-snap before the QB works a classic Levels concept to the trips side. The X receiver runs a deep dig sitting behind the linebackers while the slot climbs to a shallow crosser underneath it, stacking two horizontal in-cuts at different depths, and the outside TE or WR from the trips stack pushes vertical up the seam to hold the safety. The backside receiver runs a short drag across the field as a checkdown or man beater against trailing defenders. This is a pass play built as a zone beater, primarily attacking Cover 2 and Cover 3 by stretching the intermediate zone defenders horizontally, with the primary read progressing from the deep dig to the underneath crosser and finally to the backside drag.
Read the deep safeties pre-snap, if you see two high safeties expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the dig route will be the primary target for the offense. Watch the flow of the linebackers after the shuffle motion, aggressive defenses that key on motion will overrun the play and open up the crossing routes underneath. As the defense, user the underneath linebacker to sit in the throwing lane of the dig route rather than chasing the shallow crosser, this forces the QB to hold the ball longer. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable since both the dig and the crosser create natural rub traffic against man defenders trying to stay in phase. Bring a nano blitz or interior pressure package to disrupt the timing since the QB needs a clean pocket to let the dig route develop against zone drops.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing or to identify man versus zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Against Cover 2, throw the deep dig into the window behind the linebackers and in front of the safety before the underneath crosser clears the flat defender.
If the safety rotates down to squat on the dig, check down to the shallow crosser or the backside drag since the underneath defenders will have vacated space.
Best called on second and medium or third and medium since the levels concept needs time to develop and the dig route requires the QB to hold the ball an extra beat.
Pair this with Mtn Bench or Mtn Z Spot in your play calling sequence so the defense sees the same trips TE formation but has to respect both quick game and levels concepts.
